The Place of Freedom

Pastor Wes Morris
Galatians 5:13-16 (GNT) As for you, my friends, you were called to be free. But do not let this freedom become an excuse for letting your physical desires control you. Instead, let love make you serve one another. For the whole Law is summed up in one commandment: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” But if you act like wild animals, hurting and harming each other, then watch out, or you will completely destroy one another. What I say is this: let the Spirit direct your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of the human nature. FLESH PRODUCES: BONDAGE SPIRIT PRODUCES: FREEDOM FLESH PRODUCES: DOUBT SPIRIT PRODUCES: FAITH Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. FLESH PRODUCES: RELIGION SPIRIT PRODUCES: RELATIONSHIP FLESH PRODUCES: LEGALISM SPIRIT PRODUCES: GRACE Romans 6:14 (GW) Sin shouldn’t have power over you because you’re not controlled by God’s laws, but by God’s grace. Hebrews 4:16 (TLB) So let us come boldly to the very throne of God and stay there to receive his mercy and to find grace to help us in our times of need. THE PLACE OF FREEDOM Galatians 5:22-25 (NIV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. I. ALLOW THE HOLY SPIRIT TO RENEW MY MIND. Romans 8:6 (NIV) If your sinful nature controls your mind, there is death. But if the Holy Spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace. II. IDENTIFY THE LIES I’VE BELIEVED. John 8:44 (NIV) When he (the devil) lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. √ ACKNOWLEDGE IT.√ ADDRESS IT.√ RENOUNCE IT. II Corinthians 10:5 (MSG) The world is unprincipled and it doesn’t fight fair. But we don’t live or fight our battles that way. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into a life shaped by Christ. III. SPEAK THE TRUTH. John 8:31-32 (NLT) Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Register for Baptism: baychapel.com/baptism Find out about Freedom this Fall: baychapel.com/freedom

Cultural Drift

DRIFT PT. 3 | Sunday, August 20th Pastor Wes Morris Hebrews 2:1 (NLT) We must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. Daniel 1:3-8 (NIV) Then the king ordered some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service. 6 Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. 8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. CULTURAL DRIFT I. LET’S BE FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH. John 1:14 (NIV) The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. II. LET’S NOT SWERVE TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT. Ephesians 5:3 (GNT) Since you are God's people, it is not right that any matters of sexual immorality or indecency or greed should even be mentioned among you. Nor is it fitting for you to use language which is obscene, profane, or vulgar. Rather you should give thanks to God. I Corinthians 6:9-11 (NLT) Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. III. LET’S NOT FEAR PERSECUTION. John 15:20 (NIV) Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. II Timothy 3:12 (ESV) Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. IV. LET’S LIVE IN A WAY THAT HONORS GOD I Corinthians 6:19-20 (GNT) Don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and who was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourselves but to God; he bought you for a price. So use your bodies for God's glory.

CLOSER

Pastor Bria Gilmore
Hebrews 2:1 ESV - Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. Isaiah 53:6 NIV - We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. ✓ FEAR ✓ CURIOSITY ✓ DISTRACTED LEADERS John 10:11 ESV - I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. CLOSER I. FOLLOW HIM John 10:3-5 ESV - “...The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” II. KNOW HIS VOICE John 10:27 ESV - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. HIS WORD PRAYER FASTING III. TRUST THE GOOD SHEPHERD Ezekiel 34:12 ESV - As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness.

I John 2:15 (MSG) Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. ✓ DISCOURAGEMENT. Psalm 42:11 (CEV) Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless? I trust you, Lord! And I will praise you again because you help me, and you are my God. James 4:8 (ESV) Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Draw (v); to pull or drag (something such as a vehicle) so as to make it follow behind. DRIFTING OR DRAWING? I. ALLOW THE HOLY SPIRIT TO CHANGE THE WAY I THINK. Romans 12:1-2 (CEV) I beg you to offer your bodies to him as a living sacrifice, pure and pleasing. That's the most sensible way to serve God. Don't be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. II. ALLOW GOD’S WORD TO DEFINE MY LIFE. Hebrews 2:1 (NLT) We must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. Ephesians 6:12-14 (CEV) We are fighting against forces and authorities and against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world. So put on all the armor that God gives. Then when that evil day comes, you will be able to defend yourself. And when the battle is over, you will still be standing firm. Be ready! Let the truth be like a belt around your waist, and let God's justice protect you like armor. III. DRAW NEAR TO GOD. Hebrews 4:16 (ESV) Let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 7:25 (ESV) He is able to save forever those who draw near to God... Hebrews 11:6 (ESV) Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who draws near to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
